Cooperative banks across India have confirmed they will continue to provide full banking services during the proposed three-day bank strike scheduled from September 28 to September 30, 2026. This clarification comes from leading industry bodies, reassuring customers that essential financial transactions will remain accessible.
The National Federation of Urban Cooperative Banks and Credit Societies (NAFCUB), National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC), and National Federation of State Cooperative Banks (NAFSCOB) jointly announced that cooperative banking institutions have no plans to join the strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). This means their branches will operate as usual.
Services Available During the Strike
Customers of cooperative banks can expect uninterrupted access to a wide range of services. These include:
- Branch-Based Services: Deposits, withdrawals, remittances, and other over-the-counter transactions will be available, subject to individual bank arrangements.
- Digital Channels: ATMs, mobile banking, internet banking, and UPI services will continue to function where offered by the respective cooperative banks.
- Credit Facilities: Eligible farmers and members can still approach cooperative banks for agricultural and other credit-related requirements. Urban Cooperative Banks will also serve individuals, traders, and small businesses for their banking needs.
While most services are expected to be normal, customers are advised to contact their specific cooperative bank or branch to confirm the availability of particular facilities and transaction options.
The Role of Cooperative Banks
India's extensive cooperative banking network includes approximately 1,450 Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), 34 State Cooperative Banks (StCBs), and 351 District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs). These institutions play a crucial role across rural, semi-urban, and urban areas, serving diverse segments of society including farmers, rural households, small businesses, traders, and entrepreneurs.
The industry bodies reiterated their commitment to customer service, financial inclusion, and accessible banking, ensuring that cooperative banks at all levels will continue to serve their members and customers according to their normal operational schedules during the strike period.
