Commercial LPG, CNG Prices Rise June 4; Domestic Rates Stable Across Major Indian Cities

· · 2 min read

Commercial LPG cylinder prices saw a ₹42 hike in Delhi, while CNG rates increased by ₹2 per kg on May 26, totaling ₹6 since May 15. Domestic LPG prices remain unchanged since early March despite rising global costs.

Fuel prices in India saw varied movements on June 4, with commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) experiencing increases, while domestic LPG prices held steady. These revisions come amidst fluctuating international energy markets and government efforts to manage supply and inflation.

Commercial LPG and CNG See Hikes

The price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder rose by ₹42 in Delhi and ₹53.5 in Kolkata, effective June 1. The 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinder in Delhi also saw an increase of ₹11, now costing ₹821.5. These adjustments follow a previous hike on May 14, marking repeated increases in commercial fuel costs.

CNG prices also continued their upward trend, with a ₹2 per kg increase on May 26. This was the fourth hike since May 15, bringing the total increase to ₹6 per kg. In Delhi, CNG is now priced at ₹83.09 per kg. Similar increases were observed across other major cities.

Domestic LPG Prices Remain Unchanged

In contrast, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has remained stable since early March, holding at ₹913 in Delhi. Government sources indicate this stability is a deliberate effort to shield household consumers from global energy volatility, despite a significant rise in import costs. The cost of supplying a domestic LPG cylinder has reportedly increased by about two-fifths in recent months due to higher international benchmark prices.

"Government sources said this reflects efforts to shield consumers from global energy volatility."

For beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, the government provides a ₹300 per cylinder direct benefit transfer subsidy, making the effective price significantly lower than the actual supply cost.

Factors Influencing Fuel Prices

The recent fuel price surges are largely attributed to a spike in global energy costs. A key factor cited is the US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28 and Tehran's subsequent retaliation, which led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. India sources over 40% of its crude oil and about 90% of its LPG imports from the Middle East, with a substantial portion transiting through this critical strait.

Price revisions are part of a monthly review conducted by state-owned oil marketing companies. Rates vary across states due to local taxes like VAT.
