Coforge Appoints Akhil Gupta as Chairperson; Stock Bucks Nifty IT Trend

· · 2 min read

Coforge Ltd. has named Akhil Gupta, former Vice-Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, as its new Non-Executive Independent Director and Chairperson for a five-year term, effective September 29, 2026. The company's shares were the sole Nifty IT constituent trading positively amidst a broader sector downturn.

Coforge Ltd. has announced the appointment of Akhil Gupta as its new Non-Executive Independent Director and Chairperson, effective September 29, 2026. This significant leadership change comes as the company's stock demonstrated remarkable resilience, being the sole Nifty IT constituent to trade in positive territory on Tuesday, even as the broader IT sector faced considerable pressure.

Akhil Gupta's Extensive Experience

Mr. Gupta's appointment is for a five-year term, bringing over four decades of professional experience to Coforge. He is widely recognized for his tenure as the former Vice-Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, a group he was associated with since its inception, playing a pivotal role in its growth and strategic direction.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Gupta's impressive career also includes completing the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2002. His current leadership roles extend to being the Chairman of the Board of Directors for 360 ONE WAM Ltd and Bharti Life Insurance Ltd. Furthermore, he serves as a board member for several other prominent companies, including Zepto, Snapdeal, Eutelsat Communications, and Lodha Developers.

Leadership Transition and Stock Performance

The appointment of Akhil Gupta follows the resignation of Coforge's former Chairperson, Om Prakash Bhatt, earlier in September. In an exchange filing, the company clarified that Bhatt's departure was a result of a board evaluation exercise conducted between March and April 2026, and was not related to Coforge's financial statements, reporting, or any other financial matters.

On the day of Gupta's appointment, Coforge shares were trading approximately 0.30 percent higher at Rs 1,784. This upward movement stood in stark contrast to the general downturn experienced across the Nifty IT index, highlighting investor confidence in the company amidst sector-wide challenges.

Brokerage Outlook

Major brokerages have weighed in on Coforge's prospects following the leadership change:

  • JPMorgan maintained an 'Overweight' rating on Coforge, setting a target price of Rs 1,850. The brokerage noted that Coforge's business fundamentals remain robust and emphasized that the board changes are independent of the company's controls and business performance.
  • Jefferies, while acknowledging that the stock might see some consolidation after a significant rally over the past six months, issued a 'Buy' rating with a target price of Rs 2,040. Jefferies suggested that any sharp weakness in the stock should be viewed as a buying opportunity.
