Fuel prices in India have seen recent adjustments, with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) rates rising in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. These increases come amidst ongoing concerns about global energy supplies and efforts to diversify India's energy sources.
Recent Price Hikes in Mumbai and Delhi
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) implemented a price increase for CNG in Mumbai, raising it by ₹2 per kilogram. This adjustment, effective from the morning of September 1, 2026, sets the new CNG rate at ₹88 per kilogram in Mumbai and surrounding areas. MGL also hiked the price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM) from the same date.
Earlier, on August 29, Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) increased the price of CNG in Delhi by ₹3.89 per kilogram. Citing a sharp rise in international LNG prices due to the renewed West Asia crisis and disruptions in gas cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz, the new Delhi CNG price became ₹86.98 per kilogram, up from ₹83.09 per kilogram.

Government Efforts to Diversify Energy Sources
In response to supply uncertainties and a desire to reduce dependence on imported cooking gas, the Indian government is actively pursuing strategies to strengthen domestic LPG availability and expand piped natural gas connections. An incentive scheme for city gas distributors, approved from September 1, 2026, aims to boost domestic PNG connections, with states and Union Territories providing administrative support for the shift from LPG.
India is also significantly diversifying its energy imports. Data indicates a notable shift in LPG and LNG supplies towards the United States, particularly amid disruptions in West Asia. In August 2026, India imported approximately 0.62 million tonnes of LPG from the US, following 0.89 million tonnes in July, together accounting for over 73 percent of the country's LPG imports. This trend reflects a decrease in imports from traditional Gulf suppliers due to regional conflicts affecting shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
While LPG and LNG sourcing patterns have adapted, Russia remains India's largest crude oil supplier. India imported nearly 2 million barrels per day of crude from Russia in August, significantly more than other suppliers. Venezuelan crude has also gained importance in India's supply diversification efforts.
