Indian consumers are facing higher costs for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) after recent price hikes in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The increases, effective in late August and early September 2026, are attributed to a sharp rise in international LNG prices and disruptions in global gas cargo movements.
Despite these increases, household LPG cylinder prices have largely remained stable across the country. The government is actively working to reduce reliance on imported cooking gas, secure alternative supplies, and expand domestic PNG connections to mitigate future price volatility.
Recent Price Revisions
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) raised the price of CNG in Delhi by ₹3.89 per kg, effective from August 29, 2026, bringing the new rate to ₹86.98 per kg from ₹83.09 per kg. This marks a cumulative increase of nearly ₹10 per kg in Delhi's CNG prices since the beginning of the year 2026. IGL cited the renewed West Asia crisis and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz for the hike.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) also increased CNG prices in Mumbai by ₹2 per kg, setting the rate at ₹88 per kg in and around the city, effective September 1, 2026. Concurrently, MGL hiked the price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM) from the same date.

Government Initiatives to Diversify Supply
In response to supply concerns and to manage subsidy expenditures, the government has approved an incentive scheme for city gas distributors. This scheme, effective from September 1, 2026, aims to increase domestic PNG connections. States and Union Territories have been urged to provide administrative support to accelerate the transition from LPG to piped gas.
India is also intensifying efforts to secure more LPG and LNG supplies from the United States, amidst ongoing disruptions in the West Asia region. Maritime tracking services reported significant crude oil and gas ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman on September 4, 2026, indicating active efforts to maintain energy flows despite geopolitical tensions.
