Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced a ₹2,000 crore grant for Bengaluru road improvements and free bus passes for students. These initiatives, part of a 'Youth Era' agenda, followed his first cabinet meeting.

Hours after taking the oath as Chief Minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar unveiled a series of welfare and youth-focused initiatives. These announcements, made after his first Cabinet meeting, are seen as setting the tone for his administration’s governance agenda, which he termed a “Youth Era.”

“It is not just about making promises; they must be implemented,” Shivakumar stated at a press conference following the meeting, emphasizing a commitment to tangible action.

Key Initiatives Announced by CM Shivakumar

Grant for Bengaluru Infrastructure

Focusing on the state capital, Chief Minister Shivakumar announced a significant ₹2,000 crore grant specifically for asphalting roads across Bengaluru. This measure aims to address long-standing infrastructure concerns in the city.

Free Bus Passes for Students

A major boon for students, the administration will provide free bus passes to students from school level up to postgraduate courses. This facility will be available on non-luxury, government-run buses throughout Karnataka, aiming to improve access to education.

Establishment of a Private Employment Exchange

To boost employment opportunities, the government plans to establish a state-backed private employment exchange. This platform will serve to connect job seekers with potential employers and will also focus on skill development and career guidance. Detailed guidelines for its operation are expected within a month.

Formation of 10,000 Youth Clubs

Promoting community engagement and skill development among young people, the government intends to set up 10,000 youth clubs across Karnataka. These clubs will facilitate sports, cultural activities, leadership training, and broader community participation, with financial assistance provided to support their functioning.

Fast-Track Government Job Recruitment

The Shivakumar government has pledged to expedite the recruitment process for approximately 56,000 vacant government positions. A comprehensive recruitment calendar, detailing department-wise hiring schedules, is anticipated to be released soon.

Relief for Homeowners

In a one-time measure, the administration also addressed long-standing issues concerning Occupancy Certificates (OC) and Completion Certificates (CC). Homeowners who applied before the end of last month, and whose properties have deviations of up to 20 percent in plots measuring up to 2,500 square feet, will be granted relief under a proposed new framework.
