Cleartrip, the online travel agency backed by Flipkart, is making a significant strategic pivot by introducing comprehensive holiday packages. The company views this expansion as a crucial step to enhance its financial performance, particularly by securing higher margins and increasing the overall value derived from each customer.
Targeting Higher Margins and Customer Lifetime Value
Gaurav Patwari, Chief Business Officer at Cleartrip, emphasized that holiday packages represent a “very high-margin business” compared to standalone travel bookings. This new category is expected to dramatically alter the equation between customer acquisition costs (CAC) and the margins generated per customer once it achieves sufficient scale.
“The best thing is in this business, once you acquire a customer, how do you increase the productivity of the customer on your platform? That can happen only when you have products like holiday,” Patwari stated, highlighting the objective to maximize the productivity and lifetime value of its existing customer base.
Strategic Advantages and Market Approach
Cleartrip believes its established relationships and scale within the travel ecosystem, including direct contracts with airlines and hotels, provide a structural advantage. This allows the company to negotiate “very deep value deals,” which are then leveraged to craft attractive holiday itineraries. Unlike air travel, often described as a commodity business with limited pricing power, holidays offer greater flexibility for customisation and pricing due to their inherent complexity.
The company is entering a market estimated to be 90% fragmented, currently dominated by regional players, local tour operators, and traditional travel agents. Cleartrip plans to differentiate its offering through expertly curated, yet flexible, itineraries that empower customers to modify hotel choices and activities to suit their preferences.
A New Battleground for Online Travel Agencies
With an addressable market for holidays and packages valued at approximately $20 billion, this segment is emerging as a critical battleground for India’s online travel agencies (OTAs). As platforms expand beyond individual flight or hotel bookings, focusing on margins and customer lifetime value is becoming increasingly central to their competitive strategies. Cleartrip’s immediate goal is to convert its existing travel traffic into these higher-value holiday transactions, aiming for holidays to become a significant contributor to its overall customer economics in the long term.
