CEO's 16-Day Digital Detox Goes Viral: "Everything Carried On Just Fine Without Me"

· · 3 min read

Piramal Finance CEO Jairam Sridharan took a 16-day digital detox, returning to 3,000 WhatsApp messages and 2,000 emails. His humbling realization: the world continued smoothly without his constant presence.

Mumbai, India – Jairam Sridharan, Managing Director and CEO of Piramal Finance, has shared a profound reflection on work-life balance following a 16-day complete digital detox. His LinkedIn post detailing the experience has resonated widely, offering a fresh perspective on professional indispensability.

A Complete Disconnect

During his break, Sridharan deliberately avoided all digital communication, including emails, phone calls, WhatsApp, social media, and even news updates. He chose instead to dedicate uninterrupted time to family and friends, a rare feat for a top executive in today's hyper-connected world.

Upon his return, Sridharan was met with a digital deluge: more than 3,000 unread WhatsApp messages, 2,000 unread emails, and hundreds of missed calls. Notably, some of these calls were from his boss and the company’s promoter, underscoring the perceived importance of his constant availability.

“Returned to 'normal life' yesterday night, after a 16 day break. Per my usual custom, for these 16 days I did not access email, didn't pick up any calls, stayed away from WhatsApp, didn't engage in any social media chatter, didn't watch the news,” Sridharan wrote in his viral post.

The Humbling Realization

Despite the mountain of notifications, Sridharan's most significant takeaway was a humbling one. He observed that crucial business operations, such as May's month-end drills, unfolded without a hitch in his absence. Major global events, including RBI policy announcements, oil price movements, and ongoing conflicts, also progressed as usual.

“May’s month-end drill came and went. My absence made no difference,” he noted, adding, “Everything in the world has carried on just fine without me.”

Sridharan’s post blended humor with introspection, mentioning his delight at Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL triumph and joking about a perpetually dug-up road outside his house.

The Cost and Value of Disconnection

While the digital detox offered immense personal benefits, Sridharan acknowledged that complete disconnection isn't without its costs. He shared that a close friend experienced a significant, distressing life event during his absence, highlighting the potential to miss important personal moments.

Nevertheless, for Sridharan, the ability to be fully present with his family outweighed these sacrifices.

“Device and interruption-free time does entail some costs, some sacrifices. But the ability to be 100% present with your family for two weeks? Priceless,” he concluded.

Public Reaction

Sridharan's candid reflections have sparked considerable discussion online, with many professionals praising his courage and the profound lesson in work-life balance. Commenters lauded his conviction in taking such a break at an MD/CEO level, echoing the sentiment that the world, and business, can indeed carry on without constant individual oversight.
