New Delhi – The Indian government has announced a significant intervention to stabilize soaring onion prices, offering the essential kitchen staple at a subsidized rate of ₹35 per kilogram through various government-run outlets. This move, aimed at providing immediate relief to consumers, will be facilitated by organizations such as NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar.
Subsidized Onion Sales Launched
The decision comes as consumers face considerable distress due to the continuous rise in onion costs across the country. By making onions available at a fixed, lower price, the Centre seeks to ease the financial burden and ensure wider access to the commodity. These subsidized sales are part of the government's broader strategy to utilize its buffer stocks for market intervention during periods of price volatility.
'Kanda Express' Boosts Supply Chain
In a parallel effort to enhance availability and curb price hikes, the Centre is also ramping up the transportation of onions through its specialized 'Kanda Express' service. This rail-based initiative is designed to move large quantities of onions efficiently from producing regions to major consumption hubs.
Initial consignments via the Kanda Express are set to reach Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai, and Guwahati. A subsequent phase will see approximately 800 metric tonnes of onions transported to Delhi and other parts of north India, where they will also be sold at the subsidized rate of ₹35 per kg. This dual approach of direct subsidized sales and accelerated supply chain movement underscores the government's commitment to addressing the current onion price crisis effectively.
