In anticipation of a three-day nationwide bank strike, the Finance Ministry has announced that central government employees and pensioners will receive their September 2026 salary and pension payments early. Instead of the usual month-end disbursement, funds will be credited on Friday, September 25, 2026.
Why the Early Payment?
The decision to disburse payments ahead of schedule was made to shield central government staff and pensioners from potential disruptions caused by the impending bank strike. The Department of Financial Services indicated that banking transactions, including salary credits, cheque clearances, and loan disbursements, were likely to be severely affected during the strike period.
Who Qualifies for Advance Salary?
An order issued by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) under the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, on September 23, 2026, details the beneficiaries of this early payment:
- All Central Government employees, including those in Defence, Posts, and Telecommunications.
- Industrial employees of the Central Government.
- All Central Government pensioners whose pensions are disbursed by banks and Pay and Accounts Offices (PAOs).
Important Clarification: It's an Advance, Not Extra Pay
The government has clarified that the amount credited on September 25 will be treated as an advance payment for September 2026. This is not an additional payment. Any differences arising from the final computation of the full month’s salary, wages, or pension will be adjusted from the October 2026 payments. The CGA office memorandum explicitly states that this adjustment will be made without exception.
Details of the Bank Strike
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. This action is expected to impact most public sector bank branches across the country, potentially halting various banking services. The Finance Ministry has advised all ministries and departments to ensure that salary and pension drawals are submitted to banks by September 25 to facilitate timely credits before the strike commences.
