The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is actively pursuing stronger financial and trade relationships with India, aiming to become a crucial gateway for Indian companies venturing into global markets. Premier and Finance Minister Natalio D Wheatley is leading the BVI's inaugural trade mission and dedicated roadshow to India, engaging with financial services agencies and markets across the nation.
BVI as a Global Financial Hub
Comprising over 40 Caribbean islands, the BVI boasts an economy largely driven by its robust financial services sector and luxury tourism, contributing to one of the highest GDP per capita rates in the Caribbean. The territory is renowned as a major international offshore hub, characterized by flexible regulations and a zero-tax corporate regime that has attracted numerous global enterprises.
Premier Wheatley highlighted the BVI's existing support for Indian companies investing overseas. He emphasized, "As Indian businesses increasingly expand globally and investors look overseas to invest and raise capital, we believe the BVI can play an even greater role in supporting India's financial architecture and cross-border trade." The mission seeks to forge a "lasting and strategic partnership" with India.
Establishing a BVI-India Investment Corridor
A key proposal from the BVI is the establishment of a dedicated BVI-India investment corridor. Wheatley explained that the BVI's established corporate framework, common law legal system, and extensive professional services sector are well-suited to assist Indian businesses with international expansion and fundraising efforts. The BVI also intends to integrate more Indian legal practitioners into its global network and foster partnerships with institutions, including India's Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), underscored the necessity of a suitable legal framework to facilitate closer cooperation in an interconnected global economy. He remarked, "The visit of the delegation of the Government of the British Virgin Islands is a timely step towards this goal."
Strengthening Decades-Old Friendship
The Premier stated that the initiative is designed to refresh and strengthen a decades-old friendship, building new value as India progresses towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Lorna Smith, the BVI's Minister for Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation, noted that the diverse BVI delegation, including government and private sector representatives, reflects the global reach of its financial services industry, with firms operating in jurisdictions like Switzerland, Dubai, Panama, Hong Kong, and Mauritius.
