Blinkit, owned by Zomato, has taken the lead in India's competitive quick commerce sector, achieving the highest product availability among major platforms. A detailed study by brokerage firm Bernstein indicates that Blinkit maintained an impressive average in-stock rate of 94.4%.
The research, which tracked 150 different stock-keeping units (SKUs) across grocery, fresh produce, and non-grocery categories, compared four prominent quick commerce players. Flipkart Minutes secured the second position with an 88.7% availability rate, followed by Swiggy Instamart at 83.8%, and Zepto at 82.5%.
Why Product Availability is Crucial
In the rapid-fire world of quick commerce, the promise of swift delivery holds little value if the desired item is out of stock. Product availability has therefore become a critical metric for competitive advantage, especially as platforms expand their offerings beyond just groceries into categories like electronics, beauty, personal care, and festive gifting.
Bernstein's analysis spanned a 10-day period, with product availability checked across seven different time slots daily. Blinkit consistently demonstrated a 94-95% availability throughout this observation, showcasing robust inventory planning and replenishment systems in the studied locations.
Competitors' Performance and Market Dynamics
While Blinkit maintained a steady lead, Flipkart Minutes trailed by 5.7 percentage points, and Zepto was 11.9 percentage points behind. Swiggy Instamart and Zepto experienced more significant fluctuations in their availability rates, occasionally dipping below 80%.
Flipkart Minutes' strong second-place finish highlights the Walmart-backed company's increasing focus on the quick commerce segment. The platform has been actively expanding its dark-store network and diversifying its product categories. It has reportedly surpassed Swiggy Instamart in both dark-store count and PIN-code coverage across India's top 10 cities, signaling aggressive growth ahead of the festive season.
Limitations of the Study
It is important to note that the findings of the Bernstein study reflect product availability within specific geographic areas. The research covered at least three PIN codes each in Mumbai, Gurugram, and Bengaluru. Therefore, availability rates could vary in other markets and neighborhoods not included in this particular analysis.
Nevertheless, the data provides valuable insight into Blinkit's operational efficiency and strategic edge in a market where rivals are heavily investing in infrastructure, faster delivery mechanisms, and broader product assortments.
