Delhi BJP leader and former Union Minister of State, Vijay Goel, has voiced strong criticism against the functioning of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and its officers. Goel stated that elected representatives, including Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and corporators, are being compelled to persistently follow up with officials to ensure fundamental civic tasks are completed.
Elected Representatives Forced to Plead for Basic Services
Goel expressed dismay at the situation, noting the irony that while MCD and government officers are allegedly not fulfilling their responsibilities, elected officials are left to tirelessly advocate for basic services. "What an irony that the MCD and government officers aren't doing their jobs, and the MPs, MLAs, and corporators are running around the streets and alleys, begging them to get any work done," Goel remarked.
He further elaborated that tasks such as simply clearing garbage from an area have become significant achievements for elected representatives. Goel questioned the accountability of officials, asking why civic issues like accumulated waste exist in the first place when these officers are supposed to be on duty.
Neglect Across Key Civic Areas
The criticism extended beyond waste management to other critical civic infrastructure. Goel highlighted that elected representatives frequently have to plead with officials regarding issues concerning drains, manholes, roads, sewers, electricity, and water supply. Despite these efforts, he claimed, the necessary work often remains undone, leaving the public's concerns unaddressed.
Political Context: BJP's Control
Goel's remarks come at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds control over both the Delhi government and the civic body. The BJP assumed power in Delhi in 2025, concluding the nearly 13-year tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal. This political backdrop adds a layer of scrutiny to Goel's criticism of the civic administration's effectiveness.
