BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor V. Ramgopal Rao recently shared a deeply moving account of his encounter with Kamal Kapoor, affectionately known as "Pappuji," a canteen vendor who has been an integral part of the BITS Pilani campus for five decades. What began as a routine meeting evolved into an unexpected masterclass in human connection and the true meaning of legacy.
A Campus Fixture for Generations
Since 1975, Pappuji has run a small canteen, witnessing generations of students pass through BITS Pilani. When asked by VC Rao if students had changed over his half-century tenure, Pappuji's response was immediate: "Sir, nothing has changed. They are still very honest. They are respectful. They are good students." He noted that while modern students spend more time on laptops, the fundamental spirit of camaraderie over food during holidays remains.
Bonds Beyond Chai and Maggi
The relationship between Pappuji and the students extended far beyond simple transactions. Students would entrust him with food ordered from home, knowing he would safeguard it until their return. Decades later, these former students, now alumni, continue to invite Pappuji to BITS Alumni Association gatherings across the globe, from Dubai to Goa, highlighting the enduring bonds forged on campus.
A Testament to Selfless Giving
The depth of this connection became particularly evident during the COVID-19 lockdown. Alumni worldwide reached out, offering financial assistance to Pappuji. Yet, he humbly declined, stating, "I don’t need anything." He even turned down funds despite urgent needs, emphasizing that the joy of seeing and hugging returning students was his greatest reward. "When the first students come and hug me, that is enough. I don’t need your money," Rao recalled him saying.
The Wisdom of Contentment
When questioned about potential student stress levels, Pappuji expressed genuine surprise, affirming, "What stress, Sir? They are all happy. They are all nice students." His consistent response to offers of assistance from the institute was equally profound: "Nothing, Sir. I am very happy. BITS has given me everything."
A Legacy of Relationships
For VC Rao, this extraordinary meeting served as a powerful reminder of what truly endures beyond career advancements, financial pursuits, and public recognition. Pappuji, in his five decades of fostering relationships and building a community, found complete fulfillment.
