Bihar's Viral ATM Salon: Cash Withdrawal or Haircut? Internet Amused by Repurposed Kiosk

· · 2 min read

A former State Bank of India ATM in Danapur, Bihar, has been transformed into a hair salon, initially confusing locals expecting cash. Videos of the unique setup quickly went viral, showcasing an example of Indian 'jugaad'.

An unusual sight in Danapur, Bihar, has captured the internet's attention: a former State Bank of India (SBI) ATM kiosk that has been repurposed into a fully functional hair salon. The establishment, located in the Rupaspur area, initially retained its familiar SBI branding and structure, leading to widespread confusion among passersby.

From Cash Point to Cut Point

For several years, the kiosk at Usha Villa served as a regular SBI ATM. After the bank vacated the premises a few months ago, the ATM machines were removed. However, the external SBI board and branding remained intact, creating the illusion of a still-operational cash withdrawal point.

The vacant space was subsequently rented out to a salon owner. Customers entering what appeared to be an ATM were instead greeted by salon chairs, mirrors, and barber equipment, ready for haircuts and beard trims. This stark contrast between the exterior and interior quickly made the 'ATM salon' a viral sensation across social media platforms.

Internet Reacts to Unique Transformation

Videos showcasing the peculiar setup rapidly spread online, with many users initially believing the kiosk was still a functioning ATM. The internet reacted with a mix of amusement and surprise.

One user quipped, "People went for cash withdrawal and came out with a fresh haircut."

Another joked about the financial implications: "This is probably the only ATM where your balance gets reduced through grooming." The incident was widely cited as a prime example of "jugaad," a Hindi term referring to an innovative, improvisational fix or solution, often involving repurposing existing resources.

Branding Removed Post-Virality

Following the widespread attention and viral videos, recent reports indicate that the prominent SBI board and logo have since been removed from the salon's exterior. This change came after the clip gained significant traction online, marking the end of the confusing dual identity that first sparked public interest.

The Bihar ATM salon stands as a quirky testament to entrepreneurial spirit and the creative reuse of commercial spaces in India, leaving many online users entertained by its unexpected transformation.
