Barclays Cuts 5,000 Jobs Globally, Citing AI & Automation for Efficiency Drive

· · 2 min read

British banking giant Barclays is cutting approximately 5,000 jobs, or 5% of its global workforce, as it accelerates the adoption of AI and automation to reduce fixed costs. The reductions target back-office and support functions, with 1,000 already implemented.

London, UK – Barclays, the prominent British banking institution, has announced plans to reduce its global workforce by roughly 5,000 positions, representing about 5% of its total staff. This significant restructuring is driven by an aggressive push towards integrating artificial intelligence and automated technologies aimed at streamlining operations and lowering fixed costs.

Accelerated AI Adoption Leads to Workforce Reductions

The job cuts were revealed alongside the bank's third-quarter earnings statement. Chief Financial Officer Anna Cross confirmed that 1,000 of the planned reductions have already been completed, with the remaining 4,000 expected to take effect by the end of the fourth quarter. Approximately 60% of these cuts will impact critical back-office and support functions, including roles for software developers and junior banking support staff.

Barclays leadership framed the decision as a “technology-enabled” initiative focused on “organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI.” CEO CS Venkatakrishnan underscored that these structural changes are part of a broader evolution in how modern financial institutions operate, emphasizing AI's role in optimizing lower-level workflows.

Mixed Financial Performance in Q3

The announcement of job cuts coincided with a varied third-quarter financial performance for the bank. While Barclays reported gains within its equities trading desks, its fixed income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) trading revenue experienced a 19% year-over-year decline. FICC revenue fell to 1.01 billion euros ($1.4 billion), missing analyst projections due to decreased client activity and challenging macroeconomic conditions.

A Wider Trend Across Global Finance

Barclays' strategic shift reflects an increasing trend seen across Wall Street and other major global financial hubs. Financial firms are progressively leveraging generative AI and advanced automation tools to reduce overhead expenses and reallocate resources towards core revenue-generating operations. This move by Barclays signals a commitment to adapting to a new era of banking, where technological efficiencies are paramount for competitive advantage.
