Banks in India to Close for Two More Days in May 2026; Digital Services Unaffected

· · 2 min read

Indian banks will observe two additional holidays in May 2026 on May 27 (Bakrid/Eid al-Adha) and May 31 (Sunday), as per RBI guidelines. While branches will be closed, essential banking operations will continue uninterrupted through digital channels like UPI and online banking.

Banks across India are scheduled to remain closed for two additional days in May 2026, according to the Reserve Bank of India's official holiday calendar. These closures are slated for May 27, observing Bakrid/Eid al-Adha, and May 31, which falls on a Sunday. This brings the total number of bank holidays in May to nine, encompassing national festivals, regional observances, and standard weekend closures.

Understanding Bank Holiday Schedules

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mandates bank holidays, which include all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. However, regional festivals and local observances mean that the holiday schedule can vary significantly from state to state. Customers are advised to consult the RBI's holiday list or their local bank branch for precise information regarding closures in their specific area, especially when planning essential branch-related transactions.

Digital Banking Services Remain Fully Operational

Despite branch closures, essential banking services will continue without interruption through digital platforms. Customers can access a wide array of services 24/7 via online banking, mobile banking applications, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). These digital channels ensure that critical financial transactions, fund transfers, and account management tasks remain accessible.

Available Digital Banking Services:

  • Fund Transfers: NEFT and RTGS requests can be processed digitally.
  • Payment Services: UPI for instant payments and receipts.
  • Card Services: Debit, credit, and ATM card services, including cash withdrawals from ATMs, remain active.
  • Account Management: Online access for account statements, setting up standing instructions, and applying for various forms (e.g., chequebook requests, demand drafts).

Banks typically notify customers in advance if any digital services are temporarily unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. For any urgent banking needs during holiday periods, utilizing digital platforms is the most reliable option.

Earlier May 2026 Closures

Earlier in May, banks were also closed for May Day and Buddha Purnima. Combined with the second and fourth Saturdays (May 9 and May 23 respectively), and the five Sundays in the month, May 2026 has seen a substantial number of non-working days for physical bank branches. Customers planning any branch visits are strongly encouraged to verify the specific holiday schedule with their local branch well in advance.
