Azim Premji on Excellence: 'Goes Beyond Motivation, Into Inspiration'

· · 2 min read

Wipro founder Azim Premji's timeless quote, 'Excellence endures and sustains. It goes beyond motivation into the realms of inspiration,' emphasizes lasting achievement over temporary drives. Premji, known as the 'Czar of the Indian IT Industry,' shared this insight in a 2005 address.

Azim Premji, the revered Founding Chairman of Wipro, once articulated a profound philosophy on achievement: “Excellence endures and sustains. It goes beyond motivation into the realms of inspiration.” This powerful statement, delivered during his widely recognized “Eight Steps to Excellence” address in January 2005, encapsulates his vision for sustained success and impactful leadership.

Premji's quote suggests that true excellence is not merely a fleeting burst of energy or a response to external stimuli. Instead, it represents a deep-seated, self-sustaining force that cultivates an internal desire for greatness, both in individuals and organizations.

The Visionary Behind Wipro

Often hailed as the "Czar of the Indian IT Industry," Azim Premji's journey is a testament to his enduring vision. He famously transformed Wipro Limited from a modest family-owned cooking oil enterprise into a multi-billion-dollar global software and outsourcing powerhouse.

His leadership began unexpectedly in 1966, when, at just 21, he took the reins of Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd. after his father's sudden passing. Premji steered the company into diverse sectors before renaming it Wipro in 1977. A pivotal moment arrived in 1979 when the Indian government expelled IBM, an opportunity Premji seized by pivoting Wipro directly into the nascent computer hardware and software market.

Under his guidance spanning four decades, Wipro expanded its global footprint across more than 60 countries. In 2019, Premji transitioned from his executive chairman role, entrusting the company's future leadership to his son, Rishad Premji.

Deconstructing Excellence and Inspiration

Premji's quote distinguishes between motivation and inspiration, highlighting their differing impacts. While motivation often serves as a short-term, external push to accomplish a specific task, excellence, when it truly endures, transforms into inspiration.

This inspiration is an internal pull, a deep and lasting passion that drives individuals forward from within. It signifies a shift from merely working towards a goal to embodying a mindset where quality and sustained effort become inherent.

Ultimately, Premji's insight argues that true greatness doesn't just compel people to perform; it fundamentally alters their perspective, igniting an internal desire in others to realize their highest potential and contribute to a legacy that truly endures.
