India's medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) industry is poised for a 5-7% growth rate by the financial year 2027. This optimistic forecast comes from Ashok Leyland, a major player in the sector, citing fleet replacement, sustained government investment in infrastructure, and improved freight movement as key drivers.
Growth Drivers for the MHCV Market
Sanjeev Kumar, President of Ashok Leyland's M&HCV division, highlighted the dynamic nature of the market, stating, "Overall, I feel we are looking at single-digit growth, around 5–7%. It has become a dynamic market, so it's difficult to give an exact number." His comments were made during the launch of the company's new air suspension truck range.
The M&HCV market has shown encouraging signs recently, particularly after a slow start to the current financial year. Kumar noted that while the first quarter had some initial challenges, the market significantly improved by June. "We are hopeful that the second quarter will be better than the corresponding quarter last year," he added.
Stabilizing Exports and Replacement Demand
Exports, which had previously faced headwinds due to geopolitical developments, are also beginning to stabilize. Kumar confirmed that, despite some lingering challenges, exports have largely returned to normalcy since June, contributing to an optimistic outlook for the upcoming quarter.
Fleet replacement is expected to be the most significant catalyst for demand in the coming quarters. A rationalization of GST in 2025 encouraged fleet operators to resume vehicle purchases that had been postponed. "A lot of customers had postponed replacing their fleets. Now they are coming back because the average fleet age has become quite high. Replacement of old fleets will continue to be the major growth driver," Kumar explained.
Infrastructure Spending and Private Capital
Beyond fleet replacement, substantial government spending on infrastructure projects and increasing private capital expenditure are crucial factors supporting truck demand. "Construction activity is doing well, government spending remains strong, and private capital expenditure is also improving. Overall, these factors support a positive outlook for the industry," Kumar affirmed.
Innovation in Commercial Vehicles
Ashok Leyland's commitment to innovation is evident with its new air suspension truck range. These vehicles come with a 3-4% price premium over conventional trucks but offer significant benefits. The advanced air suspension system not only enables higher payloads but also greatly enhances driver comfort by reducing cabin vibrations during long-haul operations, addressing a key need for fleet owners and drivers alike.
