After binge-watching the series over a weekend, Mahindra expressed gratitude to its creators and Netflix for commissioning a story he felt was long overdue.
Despite some critical feedback regarding the series' computer-generated imagery (CGI) and performances, Mahindra stated he was profoundly moved and inspired by the narrative and the underlying emotions. He noted that while growing up, he consumed Hollywood war films that fostered American pride, he wished for more Indian productions documenting the armed forces' contributions to past conflicts.
Unveiling the IAF's Kargil Contributions
Mahindra confessed that despite knowing much about the bravery of soldiers like Vikram Batra and the effectiveness of the Bofors gun in Kargil, he had 'known far too little' about the Indian Air Force's critical role. The Netflix series, he explained, helped bridge this knowledge gap.
He particularly highlighted the IAF's remarkable ingenuity during 'Operation Safed Sagar,' the code name for the air arm's high-altitude combat mission. Faced with challenges, IAF personnel demonstrated incredible innovation:
- They integrated handheld GPS receivers into MiG aircraft to precisely calculate bomb release points for conventional 'dumb' bombs.
- After initial disappointing trial results, they refined their techniques within a handful of sorties and rapidly deployed them into combat.
- When sanctions post-1998 nuclear tests prevented the acquisition of a crucial component, IAF technicians exemplified 'denial-driven innovation' by engineering their own solution.
The operation also saw the strategic deployment of advanced assets like Mirage 2000 aircraft, Israeli Litening laser-designation pods, and Paveway II guidance kits, all contributing to the successful support of the Indian Army in dislodging Pakistani forces from high-altitude positions.
