Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has seen a range of analyst recommendations and price targets from top brokerages after reporting mixed results for its June quarter. While the defense public sector undertaking (PSU) posted a 25 percent year-on-year increase in standalone revenue, its gross margin contracted significantly by 775 basis points to 45.5 percent, primarily due to a product mix shift.

The Bloomberg consensus target price for BEL stands at Rs 489, suggesting a potential upside of 20 percent over the next 12 months. However, individual analyst targets vary considerably:

  • Highest Targets: Jefferies and Macquarie both set the highest target at Rs 550, with Macquarie giving an 'Outperform' recommendation.
  • Mid-Range: UBS targets Rs 500, Citi at Rs 515, and CLSA suggests an 'Accumulate' rating with a target of Rs 522. MOFSL revised its target to Rs 530, reiterating a 'BUY' rating.
  • Lower End: Goldman Sachs set a target of Rs 470, while Axis Capital provided the lowest target at Rs 442. Morgan Stanley maintains an 'Overweight' rating with a target of Rs 493.
  • Neutral Stance: Nomura reaffirmed its 'Neutral' rating with an unchanged target of Rs 454, citing sales beats offset by margin drag. The brokerage prefers Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) within the defense sector.

Q1 Performance and Future Outlook

Despite the margin contraction in Q1, BEL reiterated its robust FY27 guidance. The company expects revenue growth of 15 percent, an EBITDA margin of 28 percent, and order inflows exceeding Rs 55,000 crore, which includes the significant QRSAM program. BEL also plans substantial investments, allocating over Rs 2,200 crore to research and development and Rs 1,200 crore to capital expenditure during the year. The business mix is projected to remain stable, with 90 percent from defense and 10 percent from non-defense segments.

Nomura highlighted that while BEL did not secure the L-1 bidder position for the system integrator role in the Netra 2 project, its subsystem-level capabilities will still be utilized. The brokerage also noted the exponential growth in emerging segments like drones and counter-drones, which BEL aims to capitalize on by focusing on more complex systems.

MOFSL expressed continued optimism for BEL, anticipating benefits from several large platform orders expected to be finalized over the coming years from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The firm projects a 14-15 percent CAGR in revenue, EBITDA, and PAT between FY26 and FY29.

Key Drivers for Future Growth

Nuvama analysts emphasize that timely awarding of large, high-value orders from the projected Rs 1 lakh crore pipeline, expected to materialize over the next two years, will be critical. Sustained execution momentum is also deemed essential for the company's performance. "Progress on NGC, P75I, Project Kusha, naval radars, and Shakti Phase IV orders remains the biggest driver of medium-term growth visibility," the brokerage stated, suggesting a target of Rs 485.
