Ambit Rates Key Indian Power Stocks: Tata Power a Top 'Buy,' IEX a 'Sell'

· · 3 min read

Ambit Institutional Equities has issued new ratings for India's power sector, designating Tata Power, NTPC, JSW Energy, Torrent Power, and Power Grid as 'Buy'. Conversely, NTPC Green Energy and Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) received 'Sell' ratings. The brokerage anticipates a major investment cycle and significant electricity demand growth.

Mumbai, India – Ambit Institutional Equities has released its latest analysis of India's dynamic power sector, identifying several key players as strong investment opportunities while advising caution on others. The brokerage firm has assigned 'Buy' ratings to major entities including Tata Power Company, NTPC, JSW Energy, Torrent Power, and Power Grid, citing robust prospects within the sector.

Conversely, Ambit has maintained 'Sell' ratings for NTPC Green Energy and the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), indicating potential headwinds or limited upside for these companies.

Top Picks and Target Prices

Tata Power emerges as Ambit's top pick within the sector, with a target price set at Rs 420, suggesting a potential upside of 24% from its current market valuation. NTPC follows with the highest projected upside among the 'Buy' rated stocks, targeting Rs 395, an impressive 31% increase.

  • JSW Energy: Target price of Rs 535, implying a 14% upside.
  • Torrent Power: Target price of Rs 1,325, suggesting a 12% upside.
  • Power Grid: Target price of Rs 285, indicating a 13% upside.

'Sell' Rated Stocks and Projections

For stocks with a 'Sell' rating, Ambit has set specific targets:

  • NTPC Green Energy: Target price of Rs 85, with a modest 2% upside.
  • Indian Energy Exchange (IEX): Target price of Rs 100, implying a 3% downside.

Sector Outlook: A New Investment Cycle

Ambit's report underscores a significant theme: India's power sector is on the cusp of another major investment cycle. The brokerage projects electricity demand to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of approximately 6% until FY32. This demand surge is expected to necessitate an 11% annual expansion in generation gross block.

The report also highlights that the next significant catalyst for the sector may stem from power contracting, rather than immediate demand. With limited visibility on Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for capacity in FY29 and FY30, distribution companies (DISCOMs) are anticipated to accelerate procurement efforts over the next year, irrespective of any power deficits projected for FY28.

Furthermore, Ambit notes that bond yields are approaching multi-decade highs. A potential peak in these yields could signal a bottom for utility valuations, following a period of sharp correction, indicating emerging value in select counters.

Individual Company Insights

Breaking down specific companies, Ambit points to JSW Energy's strong earnings visibility, driven by its contracted renewable energy (RE) capacity and planned thermal expansion. Torrent Power's thermal power and distribution businesses are seen as crucial avenues to offset any declining prospects in merchant gas.

For Power Grid, while order book growth expectations appear demanding, Ambit suggests that current valuations offer value even without assuming a further material acceleration in new project awards.

In a separate but related analysis, JM Financial has also weighed in, stating that ongoing DISCOM reforms, particularly the adoption of parallel licensing, could unlock substantial opportunities for distribution-focused utilities. This includes companies like Tata Power, Torrent Power, CESC, and Adani Energy Solutions, positioning them for significant growth in the evolving regulatory landscape.
