Shardendu Tiwari, a 27-year-old cloud engineer at Amazon, has made a significant career shift, choosing to leave his lucrative annual package of approximately ₹46 lakh to serve in the Indian Army. Tiwari, whose decision underscores a deep commitment to national service, was recently commissioned as an officer at the prestigious Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya.
A Family Legacy of Service
Tiwari's decision is deeply rooted in his family's military background. He is a second-generation soldier, following in the footsteps of his father, Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari, who served for 36 years in the Army Service Corps before retirement. This upbringing in a service-oriented family in Neelmatha, Lucknow, significantly shaped his ambition to join the armed forces from a young age.
Before his commissioning, Tiwari had already demonstrated exceptional potential in the technology sector. After completing his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chandimandir, he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology and further pursued an MTech in Computer Science and Information Security from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. His talent was recognized not only by Amazon but also by global aerospace major Airbus, from whom he reportedly turned down a job offer.
Persistence Pays Off
The path to joining the Indian Army was not straightforward for Tiwari. He faced the rigorous selection process eight times before finally succeeding, a testament to his unwavering determination. He eventually secured his entry through the Technical Entry Scheme, a pathway that allows officers to contribute their technological expertise within the military while remaining connected to the rapidly evolving tech field.
During his training at OTA Gaya, Tiwari's leadership qualities were prominently displayed, earning him the distinguished appointment of Senior Under Officer (SUO), one of the highest cadet positions within the academy. Beyond his military training, he is also known for his passion for sports, particularly basketball and table tennis.
Choosing Service Over Corporate Success
Tiwari's transition from a high-paying corporate role at Amazon to a life of dedication in the Indian Army highlights a powerful personal choice. His journey reflects a profound commitment to service, prioritizing the unique opportunities for adventure and field service offered by the armed forces over a career in the corporate technology sector.
