"Alpha" Box Office Day 1: Alia Bhatt's Spy Thriller Poised for Weakest YRF Opening

· · 2 min read

Alia Bhatt's "Alpha," the latest YRF Spy Universe film, is projected to open with under ₹10 crore on its first day, potentially marking it as the franchise's lowest opener. This comes despite decent advance bookings, influenced by negative buzz and competition.

The highly anticipated spy thriller "Alpha," starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is set for an underwhelming debut at the box office, with projections indicating it could earn less than ₹10 crore on its opening day. This performance would position "Alpha" as the weakest opener in the Yash Raj Films (YRF) Spy Universe.

Underperforming Against Spy Universe Standards

Initial trade reports suggest a first-day India net box office collection between ₹5-8 crore. This figure stands in stark contrast to previous YRF Spy Universe blockbusters. For comparison, films like "Pathaan" opened with ₹55 crore, "War" with ₹51.60 crore, and "Tiger 3" with ₹42 crore. Even earlier installments like "Ek Tha Tiger" garnered ₹32.92 crore on their first day.

Advance Bookings and Influencing Factors

Despite the cautious predictions, "Alpha" has recorded decent advance bookings, securing ₹2.03 crore with block seats across various regions, with Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, and Karnataka leading contributions. However, several factors appear to be dampening its overall box office prospects:

  • Negative Buzz: The film's teaser and trailer reportedly received a negative reception from audiences, impacting pre-release excitement.
  • Competition: "Alpha" is releasing on a regular non-holiday Friday, facing competition from Akshay Kumar's "Welcome to the Jungle," which is performing well with family audiences. A holiday release could have significantly boosted its opening figures.
  • Post-Dhurandhar Skepticism: Some trade analysts suggest that the success of the "Dhurandhar" franchise, known for its bold narrative and realistic action, has raised audience expectations for spy films, making them more critical of new entries like "Alpha."

About "Alpha"

Directed by Shiv Rawail, "Alpha" marks the first female-led film within the YRF Spy Universe. The story follows Sita, a highly trained assassin, as she endeavors to dismantle her stepfather's illicit soldier program. Her mission leads her into conflict with another skilled assassin. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and Sangay Tsheltrim. Hrithik Roshan also makes a cameo appearance.
