Airtel Money Eyes London IPO: $800M Issue at $8-9B Valuation Planned

· · 2 min read

Airtel Money, the mobile payments arm of Airtel Africa, is preparing for a London IPO aiming to raise at least $800 million. The offering targets an $8-9 billion valuation, positioning it as one of the UK's largest listings since 2021.

Airtel Money's Ambitious London Listing

Airtel Money, the dynamic mobile payments subsidiary of Airtel Africa, is reportedly moving forward with plans for a significant Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange. The company aims to raise a minimum of $800 million through the listing, targeting an impressive valuation between $8 billion and $9 billion.

This anticipated offering, which could be among London's largest IPOs in recent years, follows earlier reports from Bloomberg and Reuters. While the current target is set at $800 million, it represents a recalibration from initial expectations that had eyed a larger sum in the $1.5 billion to $2 billion range. Sources suggest the company has already filed for the offering.

Strategic Move for Growth

Airtel Money operates an extensive network of branches and kiosks across Africa, facilitating a wide array of financial services. These include utility bill payments, microloans, and everyday goods purchases. The platform processed a staggering $213 billion in the 12 months leading up to June and boasts approximately 53 million monthly active users, with East Africa, Nigeria, and French-speaking Africa forming its core customer base.

The decision to list in London stems from the city's robust emerging-market investor base and its deep understanding of the fintech and payments sectors, according to Airtel Africa's CEO, Sunil Taldar. This strategic choice is also bolstered by recent changes from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) designed to streamline and shorten the IPO process in the UK, making the market more competitive.

Market Context and Future Outlook

The timeline for the Airtel Money IPO was previously adjusted, pushing the planned listing to the second half of the year amidst broader market volatility. Several other companies have also delayed their IPO plans in response to uncertain economic conditions.

Prominent financial institutions including Citigroup Inc, Barclays Plc, Bank of America Corp, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, and JPMorgan Chase & Co are reportedly arranging the offering. Should the Airtel Money IPO proceed as planned, it would significantly boost London's IPO tally for the year, potentially surpassing the $1 billion mark, and underscore the city's enduring appeal for major listings.
