Air India recently introduced "Easy Connect," a new service for passengers on specific 11XX series flights, designed to simplify international journeys originating from India. This program enables travelers to complete their international check-in and immigration formalities at their initial departure airport, rather than at the connecting hub.
What is Air India Easy Connect?
The "Easy Connect" initiative applies to Air India's hub-and-spoke model for outbound international travel. It means that if you're flying, for instance, from Varanasi to London via Delhi on an eligible flight, all your international departure procedures, including immigration, are handled in Varanasi.
The primary benefit is a significantly smoother and faster transit experience at the connecting airport, as passengers can bypass repetitive immigration checks.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the "Easy Connect" service, passengers must meet specific criteria:
- Their booking must be on an AI 11XX series flight (e.g., AI 1111, AI 1112).
- The ticket must include onward travel to an international destination.
- There must be a connection time of four hours or less between the arrival of the first flight and the departure of the second flight.
Important Note: This service currently applies only to outbound journeys from India to international destinations, not for inbound international flights to India.
What Passengers Need to Know
While offering convenience, "Easy Connect" requires passengers to adjust their pre-flight routine:
- Arrival Time: Passengers must arrive at their origin airport at least three hours before departure to allow ample time for the consolidated international check-in and immigration processes.
- Web Check-in: Web check-in is not available for these flights. Passengers must collect their physical boarding pass at the check-in counter at their origin airport.
- Customs Declaration: Spoke airports participating in "Easy Connect" do not have customs declaration facilities for high-value or dutiable goods. Passengers carrying such items are advised to rebook on an alternate flight.
Some domestic flights under the "Easy Connect" program may also operate from international terminals at the origin airport.
Air India's "Easy Connect" aims to enhance the travel experience for a segment of its international passengers by front-loading formalities, ensuring a more seamless journey through hub airports.
