Air India Waives Sports Equipment Handling Fees for Select Fares

· · 2 min read

Air India has announced it will no longer charge handling fees for sports equipment on select domestic and international routes. This move benefits athletes and sports enthusiasts on Economy Flex, Premium Economy Flex, and Business Class tickets, potentially saving them thousands.

Air India has announced a significant change for travelers carrying sports equipment, waiving handling charges across select fare families on both domestic and international routes. This initiative, effective immediately, aims to make air travel more affordable and convenient for athletes and sports enthusiasts.

Who Benefits from the Waiver?

The new policy applies to passengers traveling on specific fare categories: Economy Flex, Premium Economy Flex, and all Business Class fares. This means that if your ticket falls into one of these categories, you can now transport your sports gear without incurring additional handling fees.

According to the airline, this waiver could save travelers between ₹2,000 and ₹7,000, depending on the route and the specific fare purchased. This move is expected to be particularly beneficial for professional athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts who frequently travel with specialized equipment such as golf clubs, skis, or surfboards.

Understanding Baggage Allowances

While the handling charges are being removed, it's crucial for passengers to understand that standard excess baggage fees will still apply if the combined weight of their luggage and sports equipment exceeds their permitted allowance. Air India's current baggage policy allows:

  • Economy Flex: 15 kg
  • Premium Economy Flex: 25 kg
  • Business Class: 30 kg

An airline source clarified that if the total weight goes beyond these limits, the usual excess baggage tariffs will be levied. Therefore, while the initial handling fee is gone, travelers should still monitor their total baggage weight to avoid unexpected costs.

Important Considerations for Travelers

It is important to note that this concession does not extend to all fare categories. Passengers on non-flex economy fares will still be subject to existing handling charges for sports equipment, in addition to any excess baggage fees. Air India advises all passengers to consult its official website or contact customer service for full details on eligible equipment, fare applicability, and specific excess baggage rules before their journey.
