One of the two pilots operating an Air India flight from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi, India, has reportedly failed a post-flight dope test. The incident follows a harrowing journey where the aircraft experienced significant turbulence and a sudden loss of altitude.
Sources close to the investigation confirmed that both pilots involved in the flight have been immediately removed from active duty pending a full inquiry into the matter. The test results emerged after the flight encountered severe atmospheric disturbances.
Aviation Authorities Launch Probe
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's primary aviation regulator, has launched an investigation into the incident. A source within the Ministry of Civil Aviation indicated that the DGCA’s findings would determine if the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) needs to conduct a deeper probe.
The focus of the inquiry will be to understand the circumstances surrounding the flight's altitude loss and the implications of the pilot's failed dope test on operational safety.
Air India Responds to Allegations
Air India acknowledged that post-flight screening tests were conducted on the pilots in line with established protocols. However, an airline spokesperson stated that the results of these tests have not yet been formally shared with Air India, preventing them from commenting directly on any specific findings.
"We are aware that a post-flight screening test was conducted on the pilots in accordance with applicable protocols. However, the results of the test have not been shared with Air India, and we are therefore not in a position to comment on any findings," an Air India spokesperson said.
The airline further emphasized its commitment to safety and adherence to regulations, confirming that it conducts regular, independent drug testing of its crew members as mandated by civil aviation regulations. Air India pledged full cooperation with all relevant authorities throughout the ongoing investigation.
