Air India is significantly strengthening its transcontinental ambitions by expanding its Canada network, introducing a new non-stop Mumbai-Toronto service and upgrading its flagship Delhi-Toronto route with its latest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
This strategic move, part of the airline's Winter 2026-27 schedule, underscores its growing confidence in one of the world's busiest long-haul travel corridors, catering to the Indian diaspora, students, and business travelers.
First Direct Mumbai-Toronto Link
Beginning October 25, 2026, Air India will inaugurate a three-times-weekly non-stop service connecting Mumbai and Toronto. This new seasonal route, operating until March 26, 2027, will be the only direct flight between the two cities, adding nearly 2,000 seats weekly between India and Canada.
The service will be operated using the airline's upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which features refreshed cabin interiors across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes. For travelers from western India, this new route eliminates the need for inconvenient transits through Delhi or foreign hubs in Europe and the Middle East, substantially reducing overall journey times.
Delhi-Toronto Route Receives Dreamliner Upgrade
Alongside the Mumbai launch, Air India has commenced deploying its factory-fresh Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the Delhi-Toronto route. These state-of-the-art aircraft are equipped with Air India's latest-generation cabins, redesigned seats, upgraded in-flight entertainment systems, improved lighting, and enhanced passenger comfort.
This deployment is a key milestone in Air India's ongoing fleet modernization program. Earlier this year, the airline had already eliminated the technical fuel stop in Vienna on Delhi-Toronto flights, transforming it into a true non-stop service and reducing travel time by nearly three hours while restoring daily frequency after previous operational disruptions.
Strategic Importance of the Canadian Market
Air India's latest expansion highlights Canada's strategic importance within its international network. Canada is home to one of the world's largest Indian-origin populations, alongside a rapidly growing community of international students, skilled professionals, and business travelers. Demand between the two countries has remained robust, making Toronto one of Air India's highest-priority long-haul destinations.
By the peak winter season, Air India has committed that all its Toronto services will operate with either brand-new aircraft or upgraded wide-body jets featuring its new cabin product, ensuring a more consistent and premium onboard experience for passengers. This expansion is a crucial step in Air India's broader effort to rebuild its global network following its acquisition by the Tata Group, aiming to position itself as a leading global carrier.
