Saurabh Khatri, the visionary founder behind AI startup Vokido, has shared an emotional rags-to-riches story, detailing how his family's sudden financial collapse, a humiliating encounter with a bank manager, and the unexpected kindness of a stranger ultimately forged his path to success in the global tech industry.
Early Life and Financial Ruin
Khatri's family once enjoyed a stable life, with his father operating a transport business that owned three trucks. However, disaster struck within two years when all three trucks were involved in accidents, wiping out the family's entire savings and livelihood. This catastrophic loss plunged them into absolute financial ruin, forcing Khatri to study outside their Nagpur home during scorching summer days because they couldn't afford electricity.
The Bank's Insult and Crushed Dreams
Despite the immense hardship, Khatri excelled academically, cracking the highly competitive AIEEE examination and securing a coveted spot at NIT Kurukshetra. This achievement, however, was overshadowed by the immediate need for 1.16 lakh rupees to cover tuition and hostel fees. With no savings, no collateral, and no guarantor, Khatri and his father approached a local bank. There, they faced a devastating refusal, compounded by the bank manager's alleged humiliating words: “You came here as a beggar.” Defeated and convinced his dreams were shattered, Khatri walked away, contemplating a future as a local mechanic.
A Stranger's Unforgettable Intervention
In a stunning twist of fate, the story of Khatri's plight reached a petrol pump owner, a near-stranger who only knew his father from refueling their vehicles. This businessman, who also held an account at the same bank, made a single, powerful phone call to the manager. His message was clear: “Give this man the loan. His son wants to study.” This solitary act of kindness proved to be the pivotal moment that unlocked Khatri's future.
From NIT to Global Tech Leadership
With the loan secured, Khatri completed his engineering degree and later pursued an MBA from Duke University in the United States. His career skyrocketed, leading him to build advanced AI products utilized by tens of millions of people at global tech giants such as Amazon, Careem, and Deliveroo. Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Khatri acknowledged, “The entire difference between where I am and being a mechanic in Nagpur was one stranger who owed us nothing.”
Paving the Way for Future Generations
Now, having achieved significant corporate success, the entrepreneur is dedicating his efforts to building a new platform. This initiative is specifically designed to provide children from struggling families with the same life-changing opportunities he was almost denied, ensuring that no aspiring student faces a similar barrier due to financial hardship.
