A new Philips report highlights how artificial intelligence is significantly enhancing productivity and patient care for Indian clinicians. Doctors are saving weeks annually, reinvesting time into higher-value clinical work, despite recognized gaps in AI training and governance.

AI Delivering Tangible Results in Indian Healthcare

Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to yield significant benefits across India's healthcare system, with clinicians reporting improved productivity, enhanced workflow efficiency, and more dedicated time for patient interaction. This is according to the Philips Future Health Index 2026 India Report. The study underscores a notable shift from AI being a future promise to a technology delivering measurable value today.

Bharath Sesha, Managing Director for Philips Indian Subcontinent, noted that clinicians are effectively saving over three working weeks annually through AI-enabled tools. This reclaimed time is being reinvested into critical clinical activities, allowing doctors to focus more on diagnoses and patient care, addressing a key aspect of clinician well-being.

Why India Adopts AI Faster

Indian clinicians are embracing AI at a quicker pace compared to the global average, largely driven by the unique demands of the country's healthcare landscape. High patient volumes necessitate solutions that reduce administrative burdens, freeing up doctors for clinical decision-making. Furthermore, AI is seen as a vital tool to bridge the significant healthcare access gaps between metropolitan centers and rural areas, extending specialist expertise regardless of geography.

AI's Role in Equitable Healthcare Access

AI holds substantial potential for improving access, particularly to specialist care. For instance, in stroke care, AI-enabled networks can instantly transmit scans from smaller city hospitals to specialists in larger centers, allowing for early assessment and treatment planning even before patient transfer. This approach ensures that quality healthcare becomes more accessible across diverse regions.

Addressing Challenges: Training, Governance, and Trust

Despite the rapid adoption, the report identifies critical areas requiring attention before AI can be deployed at scale. Nearly two-thirds of clinicians feel their AI training is inadequate. Philips actively addresses this by training over 1,000 clinicians annually, with AI education forming an increasingly central component of these programs.

Governance is equally crucial, as clinicians and patients need confidence in the reliability and responsible use of AI systems. Trust also extends to data privacy, with regulatory frameworks like India's SAHI guidelines defining patient consent and data usage. Philips emphasizes patient safety, quality, and data integrity as paramount, asserting that AI's success hinges on secure and responsible data handling.

Human Oversight Remains Essential

The report underscores that human judgment will remain central to healthcare. Clinicians often need to correct AI-generated misinformation, and many patients are uncomfortable with decisions made solely by AI. AI is envisioned as an augmentation tool, enhancing clinicians' abilities to process information and identify patterns, while accountability, clinical judgment, and patient relationships remain human responsibilities.

Philips' Strategic Investments and Future Outlook

Philips has invested significantly in India, focusing on innovation, research and development, and manufacturing. Its Bengaluru campus serves as a global AI Centre of Excellence, with a substantial portion of Philips' worldwide software developed there. This commitment reflects India's central role in the company's global innovation strategy.

Practical AI applications, such as Philips' SmartSpeed MRI technology, enable hospitals to scan more patients daily while maintaining image quality. The Hub-and-Stroke initiative further connects smaller cities with specialist stroke centers, improving diagnosis and treatment timelines. These demonstrable clinical benefits are accelerating AI adoption.

Looking ahead, Philips views Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities as major growth opportunities. AI innovations are specifically designed for these markets, connecting specialist hospitals digitally to smaller facilities, thereby improving access to expertise. Partnerships with governments, healthcare providers, and technology firms, like the recent collaboration with Bajaj Group, are central to Philips' strategy to build integrated healthcare ecosystems and drive growth by improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.
