Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur Lead India's New Consumption Hubs

· · 2 min read

Five cities—Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, and Lucknow—are emerging as India's next major consumption markets, driven by growing populations and rising household affluence, according to a new report. These urban centers now attract premium products and organized retail.

India's economic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with consumption patterns increasingly shifting beyond traditional metropolitan areas. A recent report, "Urban Bharat: India’s Consumption Story," by Kantar and Dainik Bhaskar, highlights five key cities – Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, and Lucknow – as the nation's new consumption hubs.

Beyond the Metros: The Rise of New Markets

These emerging urban centers are characterized by a powerful combination of substantial population scale and growing household affluence. The report introduces the Urban Bharat City Opportunity Index, a metric that evaluates cities based on their market size, purchasing power, and overall consumption potential, rather than solely relying on population figures.

The study categorizes Ahmedabad and Pune as "Elite" markets, signifying their capacity to drive immediate consumption scale due to a blend of large populations and high affluence. Jaipur stands out for its exceptional affluence, while Surat and Lucknow contribute significant populations with expanding purchasing power, making them crucial for future market growth.

City Spotlights: Affluence and Opportunity

  • Ahmedabad: With the largest population among the five at 98 lakh, Ahmedabad boasts a Market Affluence Score of 74.5 and an Urban Bharat City Opportunity Index of 7,300. It's identified as an Elite market with immediate consumption scale.
  • Pune: Combining a high Affluence Index of 83.4 with a population of 68 lakh, Pune achieves an Opportunity Index score of 5,668. This blend positions it as another Elite city with a strong consumer base and purchasing power.
  • Jaipur: Leading with the highest Market Affluence Score of 100, Jaipur has a population of 44 lakh and an Opportunity Index of 4,400. Its strong affluence underscores the evolving nature of India's consumption geography.
  • Surat: Hosting a population of 56 lakh, Surat registers an Affluence Index of 60.4 and an Opportunity Index score of 3,382. It's recognized as an important emerging consumption center.
  • Lucknow: With a population of 42 lakh and an Affluence Index of 73.1, Lucknow's Opportunity Index stands at 3,071. It represents a market with a relatively strong household affluence despite a smaller population base.

Implications for Businesses

The findings indicate that these five cities are increasingly vital for businesses targeting premium products and organized retail. Their diverse consumption-market profiles demonstrate varied strengths—from Ahmedabad's sheer scale to Jaipur's high affluence—collectively driving significant demand creation beyond India's traditional metros. This shift signals a broader, more decentralized growth trajectory for the Indian consumer market.
