Affordable Automatic CNG Cars Under ₹10 Lakh Gaining Popularity Among City Buyers

· · 3 min read

Demand for affordable automatic CNG cars under ₹10 lakh is surging among urban buyers. Models like the Tata Tiago, Altroz, Punch, and Nissan Magnite offer a blend of fuel efficiency and driving convenience, appealing to city commuters.

Urban commuters are increasingly turning to automatic compressed natural gas (CNG) cars, seeking a balance of lower running costs and driving convenience. With fuel prices and environmental concerns on the rise, factory-fitted and retrofitted CNG options, particularly those under ₹10 lakh, are becoming a popular choice in metropolitan areas.

Tata Leads with Factory-Fitted CNG AMT Options

Tata Motors has emerged as a key player in this segment, offering several models with integrated CNG and Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) systems.

Tata Tiago: Entry-Level Efficiency

The Tata Tiago stands out as one of the most affordable factory-fitted CNG AMT cars. Priced between approximately ₹8.08 lakh and ₹9.79 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for its CNG AMT variants, the Tiago features a 1.2-litre petrol-CNG engine paired with a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Tata Motors claims an impressive ARAI-rated mileage of 28.06 km/kg in CNG mode. An automobile analyst noted, "The Tiago delivers exceptional running costs for urban buyers who want hassle-free automatic driving. Its fuel efficiency makes it an attractive entry-level option."

Tata Altroz: Premium Hatchback Convenience

For buyers seeking more features and a premium feel, Tata extends its CNG-AMT offering to the Altroz hatchback. Powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with Tata’s AMT setup, the Altroz CNG boasts a claimed mileage of 26.2 km/kg. On-road prices for Altroz CNG AMT models start near ₹9.96 lakh, though higher trims may exceed the ₹10 lakh mark in major cities. "Tata’s strategy of offering CNG across its hatchback portfolio gives consumers choice without compromising on interior quality," an analyst commented.

Tata Punch: Micro-SUV Appeal

The Tata Punch provides a micro-SUV experience with the efficiency of CNG-AMT. Equipped with a 1.2-litre engine, Punch CNG AMT models are available from roughly ₹9.74 lakh on-road in Mumbai, with some variants pushing past this threshold. Tata claims a CNG efficiency of 26.99 km/kg for the Punch. An industry consultant highlighted, "Buyers who want an SUV-like stance with lower running costs may find the Punch CNG AMT particularly appealing; it offers the convenience of an automatic while keeping fuel expenses in check."

Nissan Magnite: Retrofit CNG for AMT Models

Challenging Tata's dominance, the Nissan Magnite offers compatibility with retrofit CNG kits for its AMT versions. On-road pricing for a Magnite with a CNG retrofit typically ranges from ₹7.83 lakh to ₹11.23 lakh in Mumbai, depending on the trim and kit specifications. Nissan reports a claimed CNG AMT mileage of 24.09 km/kg for the Magnite. "Retrofit kits offer flexibility to buyers who prefer a particular automatic trim. However, factory-fitted systems still lead on warranty and integration," an industry consultant observed.

With competitive pricing and continuous improvements in efficiency, the combination of CNG and automatic transmission is becoming an increasingly practical and appealing choice for urban drivers prioritizing both convenience and cost savings.
