Aditya Birla Group Launches Ultravolt with ₹1,800 Cr Investment, Aims for Top Two in Wires & Cables Market

· · 3 min read

Aditya Birla Group has launched Ultravolt, a new wires and cables venture backed by a ₹1,800 crore investment. The company aims to become one of India's top two players in the market within five years, leveraging mega trends like urbanization and electrification.

The Aditya Birla Group has made a significant foray into the wires and cables market with the launch of Ultravolt, backed by an investment of ₹1,800 crore. This strategic move marks the conglomerate's fourth new business venture in the past three years, signaling an aggressive expansion strategy.

Strategic Market Entry and Ambitious Goals

Ultravolt is set to commence operations as the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity across India. The company has articulated an ambitious goal: to secure a position among India's top two players in the wires and cables market within the next five years. This new business will operate under UltraTech Cement Limited, extending the company's footprint across the construction value chain beyond its existing offerings in grey cement, ready-mix concrete, building products, and white cement.

The group's entry into the wires and cables sector is designed to capitalize on burgeoning opportunities driven by residential construction, infrastructure development, and widespread electrification initiatives across the country.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla emphasized the criticality of wires and cables in India's developmental trajectory. "They sit at the intersection of three mega trends in the Indian economy: urbanisation, electrification, and digitization," Birla stated. He highlighted that over 100 million new homes expected in the coming decade, expanding energy infrastructure, and the rapid growth of data centers are poised to fuel substantial demand in this category. Birla added that the group's deep understanding of the product, its components, and related ecosystems provides a distinct advantage.

Extensive Rollout and Manufacturing Capabilities

Ultravolt plans a comprehensive pan-India rollout, targeting a network of over one lakh retailers and leveraging availability through more than 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions (UBS) outlets. The initial phase of expansion will cover over 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes.

Dilip Gaur, Director at Ultravolt, affirmed the company's strategy: "We are venturing at pan-India scale rather than testing the market region by region." He underscored the robust platform for growth provided by a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a network of over 20 warehouses, extensive channel connections, and UltraTech's established relationships with individual home builders, contractors, real-estate developers, and EPC companies.

The core manufacturing operations for Ultravolt will be anchored at a facility located in Jhagadia, within Gujarat’s Bharuch district. The initial product portfolio will encompass home wires, flexible wires, and various cables designed for residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure applications.

A Consumer-Centric Approach and Skill Development

Sriram Rangarajan, CEO of Ultravolt, outlined the company's vision for the category. "Wires are the lifeline of a house, but often go unnoticed. We want to bring a more consumer-first approach to the category, with safety, performance and future-readiness at the centre of product development," Rangarajan explained. He indicated plans to expand into a broader range of electrical accessories over time.

In a move to support its market entry and contribute to skill development, Ultravolt has already onboarded more than 1,600 electricians prior to its launch. The company also intends to train over 40,000 electricians in the coming year under the government's Skill India programme, in collaboration with ESSCI.
