Gautam Adani and his family have reclaimed the premier position on the Hurun India Rich List 2026, leading a significant surge in wealth creation across India. Adani, 64, and his family achieved a valuation of ₹9.23 lakh crore, according to the 15th edition of the annual survey compiled by M3M India and Hurun India.
This valuation places them ahead of Mukesh Ambani, 69, and his family, who secured the second spot with a net worth of ₹8.63 lakh crore. Noteworthy among the top ranks is LN Mittal and family, 76, who climbed eight positions to claim third place with ₹3.39 lakh crore.
Overall Wealth Growth and New Billionaires
The Hurun India Rich List 2026 tracks individuals born or raised in India with a net worth of ₹1,000 crore or more. The combined wealth of all 1,810 featured individuals soared by 12.8% to reach an astounding ₹187.5 lakh crore ($1.96 trillion). This expansion occurred despite benchmark domestic indices experiencing declines during the valuation period, with the Nifty 50 falling 3.9% and the Sensex dropping 5.8%.
India also saw its dollar billionaire count reach a new high of 391, an increase of 27 from the previous year, underscoring a robust period of private wealth generation.
Geographical and Sectoral Trends
Mumbai solidified its status as India's wealth capital, hosting 465 resident entrants on the list. New Delhi followed with 236, and Bengaluru with 129. Globally, list members are spread across 163 cities, including 106 within India.
- Industrial Products emerged as the most dominant sector, contributing 166 individuals to the list.
- Chemicals followed with 142 individuals.
- Pharmaceuticals accounted for 136 wealth creators.
Significantly, Artificial Intelligence made its formal debut as a standalone category, featuring 19 entrepreneurs with a collective net worth of ₹3.07 lakh crore.
Self-Made Success and Women's Representation
A remarkable 70% of the list, comprising a record 1,266 entrepreneurs, are self-made, highlighting the expanding base of Indian enterprise and innovation. Representation among female wealth creators also saw substantial growth, increasing to 131 women compared to 100 in the prior edition.
Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher of Hurun India, emphasized the divergence between private wealth creation and public equity performance as a key driver behind these gains. The rankings were compiled using a snapshot cutoff date of August 24, 2026, with an exchange rate of ₹95.63 to the US dollar. Valuations for unlisted companies were derived from recent funding rounds or estimated by comparison with listed peers.
