Adani Group Pushes Formula 1 Return to India After Buddh Circuit Acquisition

The Adani Group is actively working to bring Formula 1 racing back to India, driven by Karan Adani. This push follows the conglomerate's acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd., which includes the Buddh International Circuit, India's only F1 track.

The Adani Group is making significant strides to reintroduce Formula 1 racing to India, with a particular focus on the Buddh International Circuit. This initiative gained momentum following the conglomerate's acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd., which includes the country's sole Formula 1-grade racetrack.

Karan Adani Leads the Revival Effort

Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports and eldest son of billionaire Gautam Adani, is personally spearheading the campaign to bring the Indian Grand Prix back. He expressed enthusiasm for the potential, noting the substantial following Formula 1 enjoys in India. The Buddh circuit, which previously hosted three Grand Prix races from 2011 to 2013, is seen as a key asset in this endeavor.

Past Challenges and Future Prospects for F1 in India

Formula 1's departure from India after the 2013 season was primarily attributed to complex taxation issues. The sport was controversially classified as 'entertainment' rather than 'sport,' leading to higher tax burdens. Disputes also arose over whether Formula One Management (FOM) had a 'permanent establishment' in India, making race hosting fees and broadcasting revenues fully taxable. In 2017, India's Supreme Court ruled that taxes should have been paid on hosting fees, leading FOM to set aside $14.8 million.

Despite the Adani Group's passion, the return of Formula 1 to India may take time. The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the sport's governing body, clarified that F1 will not be held in India in 2027, emphasizing the extensive time required to organize and deliver races. This statement followed earlier optimism from Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who suggested an F1 race could occur at the Buddh International Circuit in 2027, with potential government support for tax benefits.

Global Reach and Brand Building for Adani

Bringing Formula 1 back to India presents a unique opportunity for the Adani Group to enhance its global brand presence. Formula 1 is one of the most recognized and expensive sporting events, with a calendar spanning 21 countries across five continents. While title sponsorship of a single Grand Prix offers limited upside, team sponsorships provide broader global recall across all 24 races.

Given that Adani Group's core businesses, such as ports and energy, are not consumer-facing, there remains potential for other companies to sponsor the event. Sir Jackie Stewart, a three-time British Formula 1 World Champion, previously highlighted India's immense potential for F1, citing the vast number of cars sold annually in the country. The path to reviving the Indian Grand Prix is complex, but the Adani Group's commitment signals a determined effort to overcome past hurdles and secure Formula 1's future in India.
