The Adani Group has emphatically refuted recent media speculation that it is preparing to launch its own airline. In an official statement released on Friday, July 24, 2026, the Indian conglomerate dismissed the reports as "entirely baseless and factually incorrect."
The clarification came after various media outlets suggested that the Adani Group had approached the government seeking a relaxation of existing aviation norms. These reports indicated that such a policy change would pave the way for the group's foray into the airline sector, potentially allowing it to operate scheduled flights.
Current Aviation Regulations and Conflict of Interest Concerns
Under current regulations, operators of key airports, specifically those in Delhi and Mumbai, are restricted to owning a maximum of 10 percent stake in any scheduled airline. Any proposed amendment to this rule would not only impact the Adani Group, which manages several major airports, but also other significant airport operators like GMR Airports.
The prospect of airport operators owning airlines has drawn criticism from industry veterans. Rahul Bhatia, the founder and Managing Director of IndiGo, India's largest airline, voiced strong objections during his company's Q1 FY27 earnings call. Bhatia argued that such a policy shift would create a "massive conflict of interest" and ultimately work "against the interest of the consumers." He emphasized that there is "no global precedent" for such an arrangement.
Adani's Official Stance
In a formal exchange filing, Adani Enterprises reiterated its position, stating: "We would like to categorically deny recent media reports and market speculation suggesting that the Company is planning to launch an airline. The reports are entirely baseless and factually incorrect. The Company is not evaluating any proposal to enter the airline business."
Government's Prior Deliberations
Despite Adani's denial, an earlier report by Bloomberg earlier this week had indicated that the Ministry of Civil Aviation was actively considering a policy change that could potentially permit airport operators, including Adani Group and GMR Airports, to establish their own airlines. The report suggested that such a proposal would require extensive approvals, including from the law ministry and the Union Cabinet, before implementation.
