Adani-DRDO Partnership to Develop Advanced AEW&C Mk-II for Indian Air Force

Adani Defence & Aerospace and DRDO have partnered to develop the advanced AEW&C Mk-II system for the Indian Air Force. This landmark deal marks the first time a private Indian company will lead such a complex indigenous airborne mission platform.

India has taken a significant stride in bolstering its indigenous defense capabilities with Adani Defence & Aerospace and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signing a landmark agreement. The partnership aims to jointly develop the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Mk-II system for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

This agreement is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first instance where a private Indian company has been entrusted with the development, integration, and comprehensive support for an airborne mission platform of this scale and complexity. It underscores India's commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

Program Details and Future Impact

The AEW&C Mk-II program is among the country's most ambitious airborne defense projects. It involves developing, manufacturing, and integrating advanced mission systems onto six modified Airbus A321 aircraft. The comprehensive deal also covers integrated logistics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), along with technical support for up to 30 years. The induction of these advanced systems into the IAF is planned between 2032 and 2033.

AEW&C aircraft are crucial assets, often referred to as 'flying command centers' or 'eyes in the sky.' Operating at high altitudes, they overcome the curvature limitations of ground-based radars, enabling them to detect low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles, and other threats hundreds of kilometers away. These platforms are vital for providing commanders with a real-time, comprehensive picture of the battlefield, coordinating friendly air operations, and significantly enhancing the IAF's long-range surveillance and battle-management capabilities.

Building on Indigenous Success

This new program follows closely on the heels of another major indigenous defense technology milestone. In June 2026, DRDO announced the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) of the Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control system. Developed by DRDO's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bengaluru, Netra is India's home-grown surveillance platform mounted on Brazilian-made Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft.

Netra features an advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, which can detect and track multiple airborne targets simultaneously, monitor vast airspace, and identify threats that might evade conventional ground radar. Its successful FOC paved the way for wider deployment and demonstrated India's growing prowess in this sophisticated defense domain.

India Joins an Elite Group

With the AEW&C Mk-II program, India is set to join an exclusive group of nations, including the United States, France, Israel, China, and Sweden, that possess indigenous airborne early warning and control capabilities. This collaboration between Adani Defence & Aerospace and DRDO highlights the government's strategic push to involve the private sector in complex defense projects traditionally handled by state-run agencies, further strengthening India's position in global defense technology.
