Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) has officially begun construction on its ambitious airport city projects, transforming four major Indian airports into integrated commercial and urban hubs. The initial phase of this development, which includes sites around Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow airports, represents an investment exceeding Rs 20,000 crore.
The company announced its vision to develop comprehensive airport cities across six airports in India, moving beyond traditional aviation infrastructure to create vibrant economic centers. While construction is underway at four locations, AAHL has already secured necessary approvals for projects in Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Guwahati, with remaining approvals in advanced stages.
Integrated Urban Hubs Taking Shape
The first phase of development is planned across six cities—Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, and Guwahati—encompassing a vast 22 million sq. ft. Construction partners were onboarded across all active projects in the last fiscal year (FY26) to accelerate the initiative. Adani Airport City Ltd (AACL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of AAHL, is spearheading these developments.
Key masterplans have already been completed, including for Navi Mumbai, covering 245 acres with environmental clearance for 35 million sq. ft., and for Lucknow, spanning 110 acres.
Strategic Investment and Global Inspiration
A significant portion of the investment, approximately 70%, is concentrated in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), highlighting its strategic importance as India's premier commercial and aviation gateway. The proposed airport cities are designed to seamlessly integrate various facilities such as hotels, office spaces, retail outlets, restaurants, entertainment venues, and convention centers.
These integrated districts will be walkable and well-connected to the respective airports, metro networks, and broader urban transport systems. The model draws inspiration from globally renowned airport districts, including Singapore Changi, Dubai International, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Seoul Incheon.
Unlike conventional real estate ventures, the Airport City concept functions as an extension of the airport ecosystem itself. By combining hospitality, workplaces, retail, entertainment, and convention infrastructure within a single, master-planned environment, AAHL anticipates these projects will generate substantial economic activity while significantly enhancing convenience for passengers and the broader community.
